A helping hand

Myhills Pet & Garden provide customers with a comprehensive range of feeds for all wild birds, from summer mixes to winter mixes. All are available in a variety of sizes from 1.5kg to 20kg. We feel passionate about helping wild birds so we cater for a variety of breeds such as Blackbirds, Blue Tits and Robins. As well as mixes, we also stock favourites such as peanuts (whole, split, ground and in shells), sunflower hearts, black sunflower seeds and niger seeds, suet pellets, fat feasts, mealworms and fat balls.

To join the feeds, we also stock a large range of feeders and feeding stations to hold all the different feeds we sell.

What’s involved?

During winter, freezing temperatures, snow and ice can prove difficult for birds to find enough food, and can lead to many birds losing their lives. If you want to help over the winter, leave out fat balls, dried fruit, cheese and unsalted nuts too, as well as any of the mixes we stock. The fat balls mean that the birds get their adequate fat supplies in order to keep energy levels up to help prevent infection.

Just a little amount of water, food and shelter can turn your garden into a haven for birds in the colder months. Birds don’t get the chance to drink and bathe during winter as most water sources freeze. Putting a little water out for them can be a huge help.

However, not all fats are good for wild birds. Many people give birds the remains of their turkey fat after Christmas but that type of fat really isn’t good for them. It is a much safer option to provide them with feeds made for specifically for them.

Also think about placement. Foods can be scare enough for birds during winter without the competition from land-based animals. Well-positioned hanging feeders can ensure the birds enjoy their treats without disruption.

Don’t forget other visitors. Whilst it’s fantastic that you want to care for the birds, be careful not to overlook other animal visitors to you garden. Don’t put anything out for birds which may be harmful to other wildlife.

We look forward to seeing you in one of our Myhills stores so we can help you make the right choices for your garden – and its winged visitors – this winter.
